LEGACY WORK
What happens to my farm if I die tomorrow?
While not a pleasant thing to think about, this question plagues the farmers I work with. In the day-to-day grind of farming, you’re focused on the work at hand. Yet this question rears its head from time to time, in those quiet moments; and it’s one that most people push out of their minds, not wanting to face reality.
Being a farm girl, I’m one to say it plainly. You will die. And if you don’t take steps to protect what you’ve worked so hard to build–to protect your legacy–you risk throwing away decades of hard work and jeopardizing your family’s future.
I’ve sat at the kitchen table with so many farm families wracked with grief after losing the head of the farm, often the patriarch. Beyond the sadness and pain that comes when a loved one passes, these families are often burdened with trying to untangle messy farm business situations since their family member did not communicate or plan ahead. Instead of focusing on grieving and supporting one another, they are arguing over details, selling ground to pay taxes, and scrambling to keep the farm intact.
It doesn't have to be that way.
Allow me to guide you through the legacy planning process with confidence that your values and intentions are honored.
